About the bible and me

My name is Roger Purdom and I am married with two (now grown up and married) kids.  I also have two grandsons.

I was one of 3 boys, brought up in a Christian home and we went to church regularly.

I became a Christian when I was 11 years old.

Having trained as a Science teacher, I started my teaching career in a Church of England secondary school in Surrey. I was eventually appointed as Head of Science and Technology.

After 17 years I was appointed as Headmaster of a Christian Boarding School in Sussex. I then moved to become Headmaster of a day school in Devon. During our time in Devon I had a serious illness which led to the end of my teaching career.

After 15 months of unemployment, I was appointed Pastor of Parkside Evangelical Church in Littlehampton. Apart from a teaching and preaching ministry, my longing was to get the church actively engaged in its community. As a former teacher I was able to go into all our local primary schools and our local secondary school to take assemblies. I was appointed Vice Chair of Governors in the secondary school. I spent 9 years as an inspector of primary schools so I was able to support our local schools, although I couldn’t be involved in inspecting them.

Having retired as Pastor, I am still involved with our local schools and working with the Littlehampton Churches Together on a number of community projects.

I am passionate about mission and I am involved in 3 missions:

  • Operation Romania Trust, which works with a team in and around Oradea in the north-west of the country, demonstrating the love of God in practical ways to many needy families and individuals
  • One Challenge UK (which is part of a global mission) whose mission is to see healthy churches reaching all nations for Christ by encouraging and supporting healthy leaders
  • Slavic Gospel Association which works with local churches in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Far-east Russia, helping them to address the particular challenges of building the church of Jesus Christ in former communist lands.
